A crannog is typically a partially or entirely artificial island in the lakes, rivers and brackish waters of Scotland and Ireland. They were built and used as dwellings for over 5,000 years. The earliest known dates to the Neolithic period, and some were in use as late as the end of the 1600s and early 1700s.
