Mithra, the famous Middle Eastern god who ended up being so popular in Rome they attempted to ban his cult, was originally a minor Hindu Vedic sun god. Mitra and his twin brother Varuna were guardians of the cosmic order and young, handsome, shining deities in the earliest Hindu pantheon. As god of friendships and contracts, Mitra was good-natured and seen as a mediator between the gods and men. Mitra’s prominence faded with the coming of the Indo-Aryans and their gods. But in Persia, he had a longer run as Mitra who the Romans mispronounced as Mithra.
