Earthworks at Poverty Point, which was likely originally built on the Mississippi River. The mounds and earthworks date to the Poverty Point culture who were hunter-gatherers. The culture extended 100 miles (160 km) across the Mississippi Delta. They built the site between 1650 and 700 BCE in the Later Archaic period. Not constructed all at once, it appears to have been built over centuries or perhaps millennia. The original purposes of Poverty Point have not been determined by archaeologists. It is one of the largest and most complex sites from the Later Archaic period ever found. Today, Poverty Point is a national historic monument, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
