Diogenes was a Greek philosopher who rejected material goods and slept in the agora of Athens. He kept only a single set of clothing, a bowl, and a spoon. Though Diogenes was obviously poor, and relied completely on charity for food, Athenians were reluctant to give him alms. “They think they may one day be lame or blind, but never expect that they will turn to philosophy,” Diogenes is supposed to have said about it.
