The royal abbey of Saint-Denis was the burial church for the rulers of France and their families since the 900s. Many of its tombs were vandalized in the wake of the French Revolution. The first elegant image once formed a part of the tomb effigy of the princess Marie de France (1327–1341). The appearance of the tomb is known from a drawing made before 1715 of the intact tomb. In the wake of the Revolution, that fortunate sketch was the only reason restorers were able to recognize Marie de France’s bust, which had become separated from its crown and its body.
