the facade of “Governor’s Palace,” as it is called today, in Uxmal. Still overgrown with vegetation, it is the Mayan ruins as they were before being uncovered and turned into tourist destinations. The image has an interesting history, too. The photograph was taken in 1860 by Frenchman Désiré Charnay, who was also an amateur archaeologist and world traveler, on albumen silver print.
