August 30th 1797: Mary Shelley born
On this day in 1797, the English novelist Mary Shelley was born in London. Her birth name was Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, and her mother was British women’s rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft, famed author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Mary’s mother died a few days after giving birth to her, leaving the infant Mary and her sister to be raised by their father, the philosopher William Godwin. Mary received a good education and went on to marry the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The Shelleys famously attended a party at the home of British poet Lord Byron where he challenged each guest - all of whom were authors and poets - to write a horror story. After gaining inspiration from a dream, Mary Shelley proceeded to write one of the most famous novels of all time - Frankenstein. Released in 1818, the Gothic novel - which is considered one of the first science-fiction novels - tells the story of scientist Victor Frankenstein’s experiments in reanimation, and explores the nature of humanity. Percy Shelley drowned in 1822 and Mary Shelley died in 1851.
