All About Colophons

What is a colophon? It is a “finishing touch” if we take the Greek definition, and since 1774 it has meant in English the extra note individual scribes leave after coping a manuscript. Often they included simply the place of copying, name of scribe, or other pertinent information about the manuscript. But sometimes, when historians are lucky, they include little comments from the scribe as well. Since every manuscript was hand-copied at a specific place and time, colophons can give indirect information about the religion, culture, and sometimes even politics the scribe lived in.
