a cross-section of Mount Testaccio, the artificial hill created from the discarded and broken olive oil amphorae created by Romans. It was a highly organised and carefully engineered creation, presumably managed by a state administrative authority. We know the hill was in use from at least 140 to 250 CE. However, as the earliest sections are at the bottom of the hill, it is impossible to know when it began. Whenever it was began, the hill is a lasting testament to the sheer size (and olive oil needs) of Rome during its heyday.
