Gold drinking cup from Ur, southern Iraq. About 2600-2400 BCE. Excavated objects and texts show there was long-distance trade between Sumer (including the city of Ur) and the Persian Gulf region, Iran, Afghanistan, and the cities of the Indus Valley during this period. The gold in this cup was imported, likely from Turkey or Iran, as the Mesopotamia river valleys have no natural gold deposits.
