What did Siddhartha do to eat after he left his family? I mean, he was rich and noble, and then one day he decided to leave — presumably he did not have any real-life skills at that point. According to the traditional narrative, Siddhartha Gautama started off his life of asceticism by becoming a beggar. Then and now, it was a common way for religious ascetics to survive. After a while, he went off to live in the woods, where he ate nuts and leaves. And he almost starved. He then decided that such extreme asceticism was not the path to enlightenment and instead focused on the Middle Way. It is the middle way between the extremes of asceticism and sensual indulgence (and between starving and eating to obesity).
