A Japanese plane is shot down during the Battle of Saipan, in 1944. Saipan was part of the North Mariana Islands, and if it and Taiwan were taken by the Allies, communication between Japan and its forces in the south Pacific could be severed. Saipan is also known for the largest banzai charge, a desperate attempt by the surrounded Japanese forces that almost worked — but superior American numbers carried the day.
