November 21st 1898: René Magritte born
On this day in 1898, the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte was born in Lessines, Belgium. The young Magritte began drawing lessons aged 12, and the following year underwent a harrowing experience when his mother committed suicide. He studied in Brussels between 1916 and 1918 and then served in the military, going on to work in a wallpaper factory. He worked on posters and advertising until the mid-1920s when he began painting full-time. He turned to surrealism after his first exhibition was slated by art critics. Magritte lived for a time in both Paris and London, but remained in Brussels during the German occupation of Belgium during World War Two despite holding communist views. He continued to struggle as an artist, experimenting with different styles but was allegedly even forced to produce fake Picassos and print forged banknotes. Magritte eventually found more success, with his work being displayed in New York in 1936 and 1965 and receiving praise. René Magritte died of pancreatic cancer in 1967 aged 68. His art received a lot of attention after his death, and has become very famous and influential in the art world and popular culture.
