During World War II the M1 Garand was the weapon most American soldiers carried into battle. The Garand was a semi-automatic rifle capable of pumping 8 bullets in half as many second. The Japanese for on reason or another, didn’t know that American troops had such a weapon and boy did American troops take advantage of that fact. To clarify: a semi-automatic weapon can basically fire as fast as you can pull the trigger. However, the Japanese initially believed that American troops were equipped with bolt-action Springfield rifles, which need to be reloaded after every shot fired.
This led to very confused American soldiers being unexplainably charged by Japanese soldiers after only firing a single shot, despite the fact they almost always had another 7 shots ready to go. And Japanese intelligence was very slow to realize they had it all wrong. Which of course led to crazy shenanigans by the Americans and suicidal tactics by the Japanese — things like trying to charge the same American position three times in a row after hearing them fire a single barrage of bullets. And getting beaten back each time, only to try again.
